December 2015 News

December 2015
Hi again everybody,
A lot has happened since I last wrote something here. The day before Labor Day, I fell and broke my hip but am recovering very well. The doctors say I’m doing well because of my active life! I hope to soon be back to my old self.
I did close my studio on M.L.K. at the end of October and my students had a very nice retirement party for me. It was 12 great years at this location!
Even though my teaching studio has closed, I still participate in many exhibits. Currently, I have works at the following galleries –
·      Berkeley Art Center at 1275 Walnut St., Berkeley
·      Arts Passage at 2055 Center St., Berkeley
·      Expressions Gallery at 2035 Ashby Ave., Berkeley
o  Here I have many scarves on display. These make a wonderful Christmas gift.
There will be more shows coming up in 2016.
Happy Holidays and all the best for the New Year!

Upcoming July Art Show Openings

JULY, 2015
Hi again Everybody,

I hope you are all having a great Summer. It has been pretty good for me so far. Open Studios went O.K., but it was a lot of work and long days. I guess I’m feeling my age, so it is a good thing that I am downsizing.
I’m still showing my art work at galleries and have a couple of openings coming up.  Below you will find the information about Runes Revealed at the San Pablo Art Gallery. This reception on Saturday, July 25 is between 1:00pm – 3:00pm. My second gallery reception will be at Expressions Gallery in Berkeley on the same day but will be from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. I will be sending out information about the second opening shortly. I hope to see you at one of the events that day.
Take care until next time and best wishes,
Maj-Britt

My Last Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios June 6-7 and June 13-14, 2015

May 25, 2015

Hi Everybody,
I’m participating in the Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios June 6 & 7 and June 13 & 14 (# 125 on the map, see link http://db.proartsgallery.org/map/map_ebos_15.php).

This will be the last year I participate in Open Studios as I’ve decided to close my teaching business at the end of this year. I will no longer have my studio on Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley, however, I will continue to show my art in galleries and other shows and events. Please be sure to check my Blog Spot at www.glimakraweaving.blogspot.com for additional information and future dates.
Thank you so much for all your support over the years. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios in June and future gallery exhibitions and other events.

Best,
Maj-Britt

May 2015

Hi, it has been a long time, since I last wrote, but I have been busy weaving. This Friday I will be one of the four artists featured at an Art Party at the Sawtooth building in Berkeley. See the enclosed info.

I also want to take the opportunity to let you know, that I will participate in Pro Arts Open Studio for the last time this year. That will take place the first two weekends in June at my studio. I then plan on closing my business this coming year, but will still show my work at various galleries here in town and elsewhere.

I hope to post another blog, with more information about my Open Studio.

Andrew Werby's latest sculpture in natural and organic forms uses high-tech CNC carving machines.  With a background in sculpture and design and after working with molding and casting techniques for a long time, it occurred to him that he could do essentially the same thing digitally, using 3D scans instead of molds.  Andrew also sells the tools that he created for his own work through his company, ComputerSculpture.com..

Maj-Britt Mobrand was born and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden and came to this country in 1961.She became a weaver/artist after first being introduced to the craft at the Berkeley Adult School in 1962.   She founded her own weaving workshop called Glimakra Studio on Martin Luther King in Berkeley where she continues to teach and sell Swedish looms.  She has exhibited widely in the Bay Area.

'Newborn Napping in Not-so-nice Nest'  Bronze/steel

One from the series, Babies and Bullets, inspired by "trench art" and visiting war memorials in Europe, growing up during the Vietnam war, and feeling lucky that we don't have wars in our own country. - Or, do we? Too often in the US there is violence with the gun being the weapon of choice. Also, too often, there are children involved. I make pieces that makes commentary on the observations around me, be it children in war situations or innocent children caught in accidental circumstances.
